"THE PRESS." (Published in the opening number, May 25th, 1861.)
The vines are ripening in sunny Franco, They blush in bright luxuriance. But grapes must fade and wither and fall, W_at charm their fragrance can then recall ? With kindly violence purge away All that must taint them and decay, And leave pur© wine man's heart to bless! What works this wonder but—"The Press." Even so to sever and purge away All that obscures the Truth's bright sway. _V)t to hide and to hold it, like that wicked Press That shut up the bride in her wedding dre_s, But to use its powers for the public weal Like tho doctor's compress that binds to heal. And to help the ''Times" to mend, I guess, Is the glorious mission of "The Press." Ye Editors, where'er you be, Welcome to your fraternity A younger brother, born tc-day, To share your just and rightful sway. To spread tho Truth, io scorn the shams, To scare tho fox, to spare tho lariibs, We come. Our aim and object bless, And give three cheers to this our "PRESS."
