IN THE ARGENTINE
PROFESSOR. FARRS IMPRESSIONS.
(ntou oru special coiutisroXDiKT.l LONDON, March 17. '•No rain; bad crops; a lot of disease."' Thus Professor C. Coleridge barr sums up the nrescnt prospects ot our great producing rival, the Argentno Republic, where he spent.eight . uc.'ks en route to England. Ihe outlook ;s not a happy one, for the Argentine has indulged, like other countries, in a certain 'amount of mild speculation, and it as at such times as these, that follies come home to roost. Professor Farr is very much impressed, though with tho inuu.al wealth of the country, that vast plain, as flat as a board, stretching 600 miles north and south, and 200 miles east and west, all covered with grass, .it", arable soil. There is not a stone anywhere that has not been brought th'-ro-bv man. But desnite the outlook, motie * nas been pouring into tho Argentine from England and elsewhere, ar.d the, rate of "interest on good freehold security is S and 9 per cent. Tho railways are financed by English capital, and all the rolhng-stock is of manufacture. What particularly struck Professor Farr of life in So ith America was the tremendous nctiv.ty o» the gambling spirit, a spirit whic'i is much ei<ouragcd by the existenoo of I'tterics, and'which is not restricted to the native population.
