WORLD'S WHEAT SUPPLY.

: ■■ j- •■■•-. ■ ' , AUSTRALASIA THE COMING GRANARY. (FROM OUR OWK CORRESPONDENT.) LONDON, February 10. The agreement between Canada and the United States is being discussed here from the point of view as to the effect it will have upon the supply of Canadian wheat to this country. It is urged in. some quarters that the great grain-growing lands of the* North-west will send their produce to America, and the result will be an increase in the price of wheat in England. The following statistics show the acreage under wheat, and the yield in quarters in the principal wheat-grow-ing coiintries'in the world :— Acres under Yield in ■ Wheal. Quarters. United Kingdom .. 1,867,000 7,900,000 Australia .. 5,262,000 7,824,000 British India ..■ 26,045,000 35,437,000 Canada. .. 7,750,000 20,843,000 New Zealand .. 252,000 1,097,000 Argentina ~ 14,562,000 19,515,000 United States .. 46,723,000 89,347,000 Hungary .„ 8,767,000 15,734,000 Russia (European) '.. 47,412,000 73,123,000 Caucasia .. 8 SSV.OOO 12,904,000 " Siberia .. 8,396,000 8,934,000 It will be seen that the acreage under wheat in Australia and New Zealand is below that of Canada, but should the Canadian supply be diverted, the suggestion is that "a new supply; might be raised in , Australasia, which is referred to as the coming pranary of the Empire. Within the Empire, India leads the way with an area under wheat nearly double that of New Zealand, Australia, Canada,, and the United Kingdom combined. The Uttited States leads in the world's supply. But against that has to be placed, the f urtlier fact -that its requirements for a population of about 90,000,000 are tending to make it an importer of wheat. Outside the Empire, therefore, we have to look to three principal countries —Argentina, Hun.gary, and Russia.
