f — , .' ANNUAL MEETING; The Minimi meeting of -the Christchurch Beautifying Association was held in the Alexandra Hall last night, tbo Mayor (Mr 0. Allison) presiding. Tho annual report stated that .tho long contemplated work of re-arranging tho grounds fronting the Supreme and Magistrate's Courts, between. Armagh, and Chester streets, had been carried out during tho year. Th© bppo -p-as expressed that tho Justice Department would see that the grounds.were kept in order henceforth. Begrct pressed at tho death, of Mr ""W.,- bey, who was a working member of the Association for a number, of years.. -Attention was drawn to the fact that the wanton damage to the troci on both sides of Moorhouse avenue' still «oiv tinned, and that a reward of £20 was offered by the city Council for information loading to the conviction of any person guilty of damaging the trees. The balance sheet showed a cash credit balance of -£2*5 10s 6d, together with £950 on deposit in the bank. Tbe receipts during the year amounted to £177 19b Bd, and the expenditure to • - £152 9s 2d. Tho excess of assets over liabilities was set down at £942 3s. The report and balance sheet were adopted The following officers were elected: ( — Vice-President. Mr A. Kaye; vacancies on the Committoo wero filled by the election of - Messrs W. M. Joynt, G. Humphreys, W. 3. Mooro, *W. Jones-, C. D. Morris, and T. N. Horsley: hon. ' curator, Mr H. J. Jekyll; hon auditors, Messrs Ollivier Bros. Dr. Chas. Chilton then gave an illustrated lecture on "The Quest of the .Beautiful," in which he showed a number of slides depicting beauty spots, and the majestic scenes of nature in New Zealand and other countries. Dr. Chilton took the opportunity of expressing his regret at thc disappearance of so much nativo bush throughout New Zealand. He admitted that the forest must givo way to the advance of man, but expressed the hope that in gullies, on steep hill sides, and in small islands, which would not be useful for anything else, the native bush might be allowed to remain intact. He referred to .tho pretty spot known as Kennedy's bush, to which access is obtained by the new Summit road, leading off Dyer's Pass road, and urged that visitors should assist in taking caro of it by not stripping it of its ferns and shrubs, and save it from tho danger of fire by not lighting matches there. The lecturer war accorded a hearty vote of thanks fot his address.
