FEERS' HOPES SHATERED,

United Press Association— By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.

(Received December oth, 11.15 p.m.) LONDON, December fl.

i The "Daily Chronicle" declares that a crushing blow hnS been dealt to the hopes of the pro-Peer and food-taxing party. London has given a maanificent lead to the country. The discouragement of the tariff reformers at Mr Balfour's referendum trick and the announcement that the tariff is not .an issue of the election is shown in tho fall of the Tory vote in Birmingham, the aggregate being 20,682 to 15,951, and in the increase in the Liberal vote which nearly captured West Bromwich. It is also shown by the decrease in the Tory vote in London, 15,596, compared with the Liberals 15,973. 'The polling throughout the country, says the "Chronicle," gives the following figures:— Against tho Peers ... 348,740 For the Peers ... 306,489 The Tory majority in Gloucester was only four, and in West Bromwich, only five. The cans© of free trade and a free House of Commons (says the "Chronicle") is already safe.

The "Daily News" states that any hope of tho Peers' party that thoy would be victorious, has been shattered.

[Tho Unionist majority in Gloucester in January was 126, and in West Bromwich 735.1 '
