Thursday, December 1. EVENING SITTING. The House continued the sit tins after the telegraph oflice closed at 2 a.m. LI BliX BILL. The Libel Act Amendment Bill was considered m Committee. At clause 7, Mr JENNINGS moved to insert the words "providing that an apology for defamation shall be published in the leading columns of tto newspaper." This was negatived by 35 votes to 18. Claiifio 10, which provides tbflt a Magistrate's power to hear evidence as to publication of alleged defamatory matter being for the public oenefit, and to dismiss the case if there is a probable presumption that a jury would acquit the person charged, was retained by 26 votes to 25. The Bill was reported with amendments. FINAL STAGES. All the Bills which had been put through Committee during {he sitting ■were read a third time and passed. The House rose at 3.15 a.m. Friday, December 2.
