At clause 7, Mr JENNINGS moved to insert the words "providing that an apology for defamation shall be published in the leading columns of tto newspaper." This was negatived by 35 votes to 18. Claiifio 10, which provides tbflt a Magistrate's power to hear evidence as to publication of alleged defamatory matter being for the public oenefit, and to dismiss the case if there is a probable presumption that a jury would acquit the person charged, was retained by 26 votes to 25.
