' ' 1— His Excellency Vioe-Admiral Sir Richard Poore, C.V.0., arrived from Weetport last night and joined the Powerful at Lyttelton. Arrivals in town yesterday included Messrs W. H. Ballinger (Wellington), A. Murdoch (Wellington), Mr and Mrs H. F. Toogood (Hokitika), Messrs George Rutherford (Dalethorpe), O. O. T. Rutherford, Mr and Mrs H. ActonAdams (Tipapa), Messrs J. HarrisonJonee (Dunedin), B. R. W. Collins (Sydney), J. K. Duncan (Hokitika), W. Dun-cati (Hokitika), Miss I. Duncan (Hbkitika), Messrs A. F. Webster (Wellington), D. M. J. Gow (Wellington), OTGow (Wellington). Mr Geoffrey Nye, -who has been appointed to manage a Hayward-West picture enterprise in Dunedin, left for the southern city yesterday. The Rev. R. S. Gray leaves Christchurch on the loth inst. He has held the pastorate of the Oxford terrace Baptist Church for over eight years, and feels that the strain of the work necessitates a change.; The church has therefore granted him furlough for some nine months. Mr and Mrs Gray will first yisit Australia and then proceed to India to inspect and report upon the mission work being done by the New Zealand Baptist churches in Brahmanbaria and Chandpur. They then go to England and America, where they will represent tho New Zealand churches at tho great Pan-Baptist Congress to be held at Philadelphia. Mr H. Cureon, who has retired from the railway service, was entertained at the British Hotel, Lyttelton, last night by a largo number of friends and regular travellers on the Lyttelton-Chnst-church line. Captain J. A. H. Marciel, who presided, referred to the great esteem and respect in which Mr Curson was held by his many friends. He had { seen over thirty years' service in thej Railway Department and for six years had been guard on the ChristchnrchLyttelton line. He was very painstaking and obliging in his work, and ! was very popular with the travelling public and hie friends had subscribed towards a small present to mark their eeteom for Mr Curson. Captain MarCiel presented Mr Curson with a valuable gold watohguard and pendant suitably inscribed. Those present drank the health of the recipient, who feelingly thanked them for their kind remarks and their handsome gift.
