. —♦ A South Canterbury correspondent on Monday writes:—"The country is in much need of rain for crops and grass. Around Kurow, Papakaio, and Ngapara, in the north of Oamaru. the country has suffered seriously with prolonged dry weather and cropsjue kmost past saving and feed is very short. Sheep and cattle havo been turned into many of the fields of growing crops. But, on the other Jiand., , tho prospects for the potato crop, ot which several hundred acres havo been . planted, aro reassuring. About Willowbridge, whero more potatoes have been • planted than usual this year, espeaaUy so. The country looks well about tho Waikakahi Settlement, hut the same - cry goes up, we want more ram. There was a good shower came yesterday for a few hours- which has a tendency to help tho crops and pastures considerably."
