« , MR J. A. JL_TCHELL. (PRBSS AB-OCI_-lO_* T__L_._AM.) INVERCARGILL, December 1. Tlio death is announced of Mr J. A. Mitchell, a well-known auctioneer, aged 6_ years. Mr Mitchell was one of Southland's earliest settlers, and was prominently identified with agricultural and pastoral affairs. For 15 years he was Mayor of __is_ Invercargill. He is survived by a widow* and a grown-up family. Mr James Hoskin. the \V.M. of tlie Southern Cross Masonic Lodge at Kaiapoi, died yesterday, on tbe day of the termination of his year of office and previous to the installation of his successor. For several years the late Mr Hoskin was a loom-tuner at tbe n'oollcn Mills. He was very miic.li respected by all who knew him. For some weeks his health has undergone, a sudden collapse, and in spito of the efforts made in obtaining the best medical advice, and although rest and change were tried, he gradually sank. He leaves a widow and two children.
