STRAY DOGS.

— •» CANDIDATES FOR THE LETHAL CHAMBER. As the result of a raid made by the City Council employees on the Richmond and Linwood districts, a number of stray dogs aro now in durance vile at tho Corporation Yard waiting to be claimed by their owners, if they aro fortunate enough to have any. Failing this they will bo humanely destroyed by means of tlie lethal chamber. The canines aro a heterogeneous collection. A few have traces of purebred strain, but the majority of them are of doubtful lineal descent. Several spaniels of varied breeds are amongst the number, and taken altogether .he probabilities aro that most of tbe animals will be claimed before the timo appointed for their despatch has arrived. They are being well looked after in suitable quarters, and the philosophical manner in which, on the whole, they are taking their detention would seem to indicate that many of them have never before had _o much attention bestowed upon them. The Council's workmen originally brought in eighteen of th© animals, but six of them wero claimed soon after their arrival. The instructions given to the collectors are to take into custody oil wandering dogs which are not wearing a collar for the current year. They are kept at the Council Yard for a fortnight, and if any registered dog is among them it will be handed over to the owner on production of the registration paper. Anyone who desires ono of tlie dogs which is "hot claimed can take it away upon paying the registration fee and the cost of feeding it while it has been detained. The experience hitherto has been that all th© best animals have found owners, and it has been found necessary to destroy only those canine dorelicts which'are diseased and decrepit with age.
