CHARGES AGAINST BOOKMAKERS.
(TRESS ASSOCIATION' TELE-HAMS.) WELLINGTON, October _-. William Ham, a bookmaker, charged at the Police Court to-day with taking a bet in Willis street, pleaded no. guilty. The case, broke down, because a deaf witness declined to hear out a statement, which it wa3 stated ho had made to tho detectives, that he had made a £-5 bet -with defendant on the Avondale races. Samuel Isaacs, a bookmaker, was convicted in the Alagistrato's Court today of street betting on the New Zealand Cup and betting tote odds. Aggregate lines of £50 wero imposed. AUCKLAND, October 28. In a case, the sequel to the recent raid on bookmakers, Alfred Degroen, charged with making bete, was fined £._0 on each of two charges. Charles Philpott and Alfred Adams, for keeping a common gaming house, were fined £160 each. Geo. Kceven, for assisting in keeping a gaming house, was fined C'-.> and costs.
