SCIENTIFIC WORK BY THE TERRA NOVA.
Tlie Terra Nova is to do some scientific Avork during the period that tho shore parties are engaged on their work of exploration. It is anticipated that McMurdo Sound Avill be reached by tho end of December. Immediately on arrival the hut, provisions and equipment oi the Western party will be landed, and the Avinter station will bo established. About the third week in January, 1911, tho Terra Nova will leave McMurdo Sound and zo to the eastward, taking ivith her tho Eastern party. Bclore the end of January, or early in February, the region of King Edward's Land should be reached. Here the Eastern party will bo landed, and also the second hut, provisions, complete outfit, and travelling equipment for six or seven men. The Terra Nova will then return to McMurdo Sound, and about the end of February she will leave for Lyttelton, Avhc-re shy will arrive in April or May. If she has sufficient coal the pack ice in tho region of the Balkny Islands will bo in-A'es-tigatcd, and also the coast-line bctAveen Cape Worth and Adelie Land. Captain Scott's first expedition found the sea shallow to the westward of the Balleny Islands, and if the ship is unable to do further geographical Avork, some time will be spent in biological investigations in the -hallow waters referred-to.
