GOVERNOR'S BAY.
An address on the defence of the Empire was given in the Allandale Hall on Tlmrsdav evening, October U.th by the Jtev. K. E. Chamber., of "West Lyttelton. Tlie vicar of the parish presided, who in a short si>eech introduced the rev. gentleman. There was a good attendance. Many and various types and classes of battleships were referred to, the lecture being an object lesson to thcfio present, both old nnd young. The remarks and explanations of the lecturer were excellent and to tbe point. Portraits of the present King, the late Sovereign, I/ord Nelson, and several admirals and other notable pereons who had .helped to build iip tlie ; . present mighty Empire were shown. A hearty vote of thanks, with cheers, waa accorded to, the lecturer. Mr W. Cowlin, Tan ex : Royat Navy man who paw eerv.ee. in the Crimea during the Russian war, impressed it strongly on all present, both young and old, to rally round the Flag, and to do their best to strengthen and keep the Empire together, and if it were possible to make it larger and stronger.
