BOARDING-HOUSE DESTROYED.
(PUSS 3 ASSOCIATION XELECKAiI.) AUCKLAND, October 22. A hoarding-house, formerly the Clevedon Hotel, Wairoa, was destroyed by lire, with the contents, last night. The occupants, Mr Merrick. his wife, and child, and the boarders, were aroused by a strvant, who discovered the outbreak in the billiard ic-om. They escaped in their night attire. Tho house vas owned by Messrs Hancock and Company, and was insured for £600 in the Commercial Union. (PRES3 ASSOCIATION- TELEGEAM.) NAPIER. October 21. Tho Hukarere Maori Girls' School was totally destroyed by lire at sis o'clock this morning. The building, comprising 40 rooms, was very old, and the flames spread rapidly, giving the girls barely time to escape in their night attire. The fire originated in a cloakroom on tho ground floor, but the canto is unknown. The 01-oakroom was locked Inst night, but when the fire originated the window was seen to be opi'ii. The school was established by Dr. Williams, first Bishop of Wainou, in 1875. Tiio building was insured ior £1800, and the furniture for £400, both in tho National office
Iho brigade turned out last night for an alarm given at 9.54. o'clock, a pa,sser-by having ob-erved smoke iisuins from a sis-roomed two-storey wood and iron dwelling in Ely street, off Madras street. The fire, which apparently originated in a cupboard under tho stairs, had got a good hold, and though the brigade and plant promptly responded to the alarm, the building and contents were severely damaged. The house was occupied by Mr H. J. Harris. who had his furniture insured for £"00 in the Atlas office, but the insurance (ii ,nnv) on the houne. was not jvrw.v twmhlo last night.
