Yesterday in Christehnreh was indeed a day of general mourning on the occasion of the funeral of the King. Thero was a total cessation of all business and work, aud the laudable determination on the part of the members of tho Licensed Victuallers' -Association to close their houses from 1 to (i'p.m., made the closure of business i__.tabli.shmentsin ( tho city more complete. Tho long lines of shops closely shuttered or with blinds drawn, the crowds of peoplo in tlje streets clad in mourning attire or wearing outward emblems ol" respect, all testified to the deen feeling of sor- . row which permeated nil classes of tho community. The ceremonial of taking port, in spirit at least, though at tho uttermost ends of'tbo earth, in the sad celebration of the obsequies of a King (so universally beloved," appropriately commenced with tbo orc-nn recital at His' Majesty's Theatre. A programme befitting the solemnity of the oc-casion hao'bscn prepared, and tbo recital was attended by a large number of people. This fittingly ushered in the' memorial service in Cranmer square. Here also Christehnreh. citizens nius--tered in thousands, and'the service was one of tho most notable -events in tlio history of tho city. In the evening, at the Antdican Cathedral, at tho timehonoured Durham street Methodist Church, which has been appropriate!v titled the Methodist Cathrdral, at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, and at tho . Synagogue, foleinn memorial services were held, which were largely attended. The muffled ncnls of tho Cathedral bells, the tolling" of tho hells of the Roman Catholic Cathedral, and tho sullen Tear of the sixty-eight minuto guns fired by the E Battery, all added to tho solemnity which brooded over tho city the entire day. /Tho trams and trains also abstained from running during a portion of the day.
