BLUESTONE AND SALT.

Against the use of formalin comes a. prehminarv report by Mr Geo. L. Sutton, tho New South Wales wheat experimentalist. Mr Sutton says that fcrraalin did not prove satisfactory at the Cbwra Experimental Farm in preventing smut, though this was considered due to an abnormal irregularity. It was of littlo value in preventing reinfection, but when tho_ conditions ol germination were good it had practically no injurious effect upon the germination of the seed. Mr Sutton found that Milestone proved, as formerly, a splendiu preventive of smuts, hut it also apun proved to have a very disastrous effect upon the vitality of the seed grain treated with it. Tho addition of salt to prevent the destructive action of tho b'.nestone was found to be better than lime. Mr Sutton therefore recommends treatment with bluestonc and salt; bluestone at the rate of 21b to 10 gallons of water, with 21b of common salt added.
