ARBITRATION COURT.

« THRESHING MILLS AWARD. The Clerk of Awards has received the award made by the Arbitration Court in the dispute between the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Laj bourers' Union and a large number of I threshing-mill owners in different parts jot Canterbury. The Court has left the hours of work to the discretion ot employers, but it is provided that a worker shall not be required to work by lamplight or other artificial light except m oases of urgency, when one hour shall be allowed. The number of hands to be employed on each mill is iixed as follows: —Driver, feeder, three staekmen, two bagmen, ono s-tn.wman, one waterman, and, in camp, one cook. The minimum wage is fixed at Is an hour. Piecework,rates will bo l&s per ICOO bushels of wheat or barley and Us per 1000 bushels of oats. These rates will cover all work involved in shifting or settling the mill. Bagmen will receive Is per 1000 bushels in addition to those rates. A cook's galley, cooking utensils, and coals shall be supplied to the men by the employer at a charge of 3s 8d per man per week, and the food supplies shall be provided on the co-operative system. If any man wishes to leave a mill during the currency of the season ho must give a week's notice or forfeit a week's pay. The same rule will apply to dismissals except whore i\hey ar« for incompetency or wilful disobedience. Tallies shall he given to a representative of the men when required. Preference to unionists is given. Drivers and feeders are- exempt from the award, which will not apply to any farmer who threshes his own grain with hu- own mill on liis own fr.rm. The avard will come into lorce on September Ist, 1910, and will continue in force for two years. BRICKMiVKERS , AWAIID. An award has also been m.ida in the dispute between the Canterbury Brick Pottery, Pipe. Tile and Clay Workers' bnion and about twenty employers. The hours are fixed at forty-fight a veek. Piecework for brickmakers is o\ed at: Competent moulders, 8s per ]000 for square bricks, and 9s 6d per 1000 for fancy bricks; setters and drawers, 3s 9d per 1000 for square and si 6d per 1000 for fancy bricks; offbearers from wire-cut machines, 10JJ per 1000, off-boarera of fancy bricks from machines to be paid day work." All workers employed in or about brick or pottery works shall receive not less than Is an hour. Provision is mado for youths, irom 12s to 245. a week and 5s per day. Kiln-burners shall receive not less than Is an hour for dayburners and 10i<l an hour lor nightbuincrs. No boy under sixteen years rhall be allowed to do cutting-off from Diiy brick machine, and no worker under twenty shall be allowed to offbear permanently from any brick machine. Overtime is fixed 'at time and .1 quarter for all employees. Prefeienco to unionists is given. The award will be in force for three years fiom May 16th.
