SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

At tho last meeting of the St. Albans School Committee the headmaster reported a roll number of 659, with an average attendance of 611. Tho secretary was instructed to write to the City Council and draw its at tention to the bad state of School road.

The usual monthly meeting of the Woolston School Committee was held on Monday night. Present—Messrs \V. It. Smith (chairman), Cleworth, Gatehouse, Crawford, Mesdames Barwick. Veitch and Wicks. The headmaster (Mr Binnic) reported the roll number to be 544, and the- average attendance 516. On one day there were only 14 children absent out of a roll of 544. A favourable reply was received from Major Mac Donald (Commandant of tlie Cadets) in reply to a resolution passed iat the last householders' meeting, aski ins that all junior cadets under the | age of 12 years should go through a course of class-firing. Tho reply was as follows:—I have the honour 'to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of th«-> Ist inst., forwarding a copy of a resolution passed by your committee on the subject of the ago limit of classfiring; for junior cadets. In reply I have to inform you that under the new regulations for target practice, which will lie issued shortly, all junior cadets wili have to undergo target practice. If you will permit mc to say so, it gives mc great pleasure to see such interest being taken in the cadet movement as is evinced by your committee." Mr Geo. Laurenson. M.P., wrote, stating that h- would give his lecture on the Sounds, with limelight views, in aid of the ttnnis court, in the Schoolroom on Friday night. March ISth. It was decided to hold the childrens" annual swimming sports on Saturday, 19th inst., in the Woolston Public Baths. Messrs J. Gatehouse and W. R. Jsmith were re-elected a visiting committee for the ensuing month. It was decided to close the- school for the usual Easter holidays

At the monthly meeting of the Ashburton Borough School Committee the headmaster (Mr Schneider) reported that the average attendance at the main school for the month of February had been_ 361.0, and the highest attendance 387, which was the highest since 1906. The roll number was 404. At the side school the average attendance had been 96.7, highest attendance 104.
