INTERNAL DISSENSION.

INTERESTING NEWSPAPER VIEWS. (Received February 6th, 5 p.m.) LONDON, February 6. The- newspapers reveal sharp differences among the Liberals concerning the tactics to be adopted in regard to the question of reforming the House of Lords.

The "Chronicle," in. a two-column leading article, emphasises the folly ot sectional divisions and personal rivalries, and shows that Mr Asquith, on December 2nd, stated that the first act of the new Government would be to reimposo the Budget provisions. The "Chronicle" adds:—"No other legislation except insurance against unemployment should be attempted until the Lords' veto is abolished. The creation of hundreds of hereditary Peers would be distasteful to the Democrats. The strategic danger is that if the Liberals submit a scheme which is capable of being represented as a virtual abolition of the House of Lords, Mr Balfour will then submit a scheme for a reformed Chamber, in which case the choice of the electors would be doubtful."

"The Times" says:—"lf Mr Asquith contemplated any heroic step he should have gone to the King directly the result of the election was known. Nevertheless the time has arrived for a real change m the Second Chamber. The basis of deliberation exists in the report of Lord Rosebery's Committee.'"

The "Labour Leader," a new paper, says the Labour members are opposed to reform of the Lords, and demand their abolition.
