A CONTENTED IMMIGRANT
TO THE EDITOR OF "THE FBI-SS.'
.Sir. —Tlie letter headed 'A Disgusted Visitor'" in your issue of to-day cannot fail to ruus-e indignation, in the minds of both New Zt-alanders and emigrants. Your correspondent's holiday is apparently disagreeing with h:rn. and 1 fail to sw where his knowledge of the labour market applies. I landed here on April Gth. VJQO. from London, and have found plenty of work, hut I must admit I got up early and did not ?tand about Cathedral Square looking for it as numbers do. 1 got my work with perseverance, good characters from Home, and on my merits. Did '■Distrusted" do the same :n England. or was it the usual int"uenti: , .l friendr He seems to think hi* insignificance prevented him obtaining * cheap passage, but probably the great yarn he mentions was a bit too great tor the High ('oinmis-sioner's staff. I fail to see what made him think himself entitled to one. as it common knowledge in England that these cheap passages are only for suitable emigrants. Your correspondent calls his own countrymen "tlie devil's own people, clannish, ignorant, and .elfish." If be trt-ats them personally as he writes about them under a norn de plume, that immediately account *_ for 'lis discontent. During thc short period I have l*>er. here, all New Zealander* I have met have made mc welcome, and for a good day's work they pa> a good wage—fifty per cent. 1-otter than 1 ever received in the Old Conntry. In conclusion, I must add that I was not lured here by shipping companies' advertisements, but enquired the pro«pe«-ts fir-t. ■\v.' l . received sound advice from the Hi_.h Commissioner's Office, which all have access to. and there is notliii-g to pay.—Yours, etc., CONTENTED.
