PRIZE DISTRIBUTIONS.

WEST CHRISTCHURCH DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.

The annual prize distribution of the .West Christchurch District High School took place yesterday afternoon, the function proving most successful. The concert hall waa crowded with, children, and their parents and friends. Dr. Chilton, a one time pupil of the school, presided. Mr C. D. Moms, chairman of the School Committee, sent an apology for absence. The headmaster (Mr C. D. Hardie, 8.A.), in his annual report, stated that the year's work had been most successful, and the relations between the staff and the pupils were most cordial. Out of twentyseven pupils who had sat for the Junior Civil Service, twenty-six had passed, ten of these being in the first 100 for the Dominion. Nine had passed matriculation and solicitors' general knowledge, two had gained the senior Board, and four the junior Board scholarships, four the -School of Art exhibitions for girls, one pupil had won a Christ's College exhibition, and was again first on the list at the examination a week or two previously. Fourteen essay prizes, and twenty-eight certificates had been won in the competitions conducted by the Navy League, the Industrial Association, and other bodies. In. the examination just lie]d, seventy-seven sat for Standard VI.. ana all passed, sixty-aix gaining l certificates of proficiency. In athletics, the school had been well to the front They bad on their walls the cricket banner presented for competition among the primary schools, and ao far this season had not lost a match. The excellent results in the cricket field were largely due to the efforts of Mr C. Allard, who deserved great credit for the manner in which he Had coached the pupils of the school. Mr Hardy then expressed the hope that the pupils would continue their studies and make a point of being thorough and conscientious in their work. He expressed gratification at the fact that a good many of the old pupils, acting on the advice he had given them, were continuing their studies. Several of them had sat for the Senior Civil Service. examination, ajid some were still studying at Canterbury College, where two had gained College honours lost year. (Lond applause.) After the headmaster's address a very entertaining programme, comprising vocal items and a pianoforte solo, was given by the children, a recitation. Bracken's " Up-a- ---?*£•" , by a littlo S-rl named Lucia Stubberneld, being a fine example of elocutionary effort. The chairman congratulated the headmueter on the excel.ent work accomplished by the school, and paid a high compliment to the teaching staff. Mr T. W. Adams, chairman of the North Canterbury Education Board, briefly eulogised the work of the headmaster, his ataff, and their pupils, and then presented the prizes.
