AUSTRALIAN BUSH FIRES.
HEAVY LOSSES REPORTED
United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, December 22. Great destruction has been wrought by bush fires in the Riverina district. The losses include much bagged wheat, standing crops and stock. MELBOURNE, December 2*2. A severe heat wave pervails, and there are bush fires in all directions. At Donald, many acres of standing crops and 20,000 bags ?f wheat were burned. The total damage amounts to £50,000. At Cobram, 1(300 bugs of wheat and CO acres of barley wero burned. At Charlton an old man named Steward entered a burning houso to secure some valuables, and vas burned to death. Reports from other districts state that immense areas of grass anel many crops have been destroyed. A number of settlers have lost their homes.
