TAKEN.
(press association telegram.) WELLINGTON, December 19. While the vote for the Customs Department was iinder consideration by the House of Representatives on Saturday morning, Mr C. H. Poole (Auokland West), referring to the discovery of wreckage of the s.s. Duco at the Chathams, asked what punishment would be meted out to those responsible for the departure of the vessel in the state in which she left port. If thousands of pounds were spent in bringing the offenders to bookj it was necessary that steps be taken to prevent a recurrence of such disasters. Mr D. McLaren also asked what was to be done in the matter, which was a.most serious one. The vessel had been overloaded, and the men badgone to their death. The Minister (the Hon. J. A. Millar) said an appeal was pending in the Due© case, end as soon as that was settled the Marine Department would take j action.
