The House resumed at 7.30 p.m. At the vcb? for Experimental Farms, Mr GLOVER moved to reduce the amount by £1 as an indication that the system was unsatisfactory. The amendment was lost by 46 votes to 22. At the vote for the Education Department—£B73,s3o, Mr MALCOLM moved a reduction in tne vote as c protest against centra ligation. Mr BUCHANAN 'supported l the amendment, and said the Government, stop by step was encroaching on the Education Boards' functions. Mr JA"MES ALLEN moved to reduce the item, "£250 special grants to School Committees," by £1, as an indication that capitation grante should be renewed. This was rejected by 42 votes to 14. Mr WRIGHT asked for information concerning the vote of £2000 for the ''School Journal." The Hon. G. FOWLDS said that a sufficient number of "School Journals" ■were issued' to supply 132,000 pupils in the (primary schools. He would 1 look into the matter of cost with a view of seeing if the ''Journal" could be produced at less expense. Mr ALLEN moved to reduce the salary of the public school cadets officer, but the motion was negatived by 41 votes to 23. At the vcte for the State Coal Mines Department, Mr FIELD moved that the general manager's salary be reduced by £1, on the pround that the Crown Suits Act should be waived , , so as to allow the Farmers' Co-operative Distributing Company to proceed for damages against the Crown in respect of an alleged nuisance in connection with cool dust at the Department's yard in Wellington, and that the dispute be referred to arbitrators. The motion was carried by 30 votes to 28. The House rose at midnight.
