THE V.M.C.A.
TO THE EDITOR OF "THE PRESS." Sir, —Your correspondent* "Dissentient" is looking at the V.M.C.A. project from a wrong , stand-point. Hβ seems to have an idea that we are doing too much for the young men of Chrietchurch. ■ < • *.' i 1 wish he would conic from behind the hedge of anonymity and let us have a look at. him. i should be delighted to show him over t&e/new building arid explain our whole scheme to him." If he is not inclined to help he might at least refrain from endeavouring to prevent others from assisting. .1 would point out "to him that the Board of Management, -which includes ebn|e of the best-known of the business men of Christehuroh, have fully considered; the matter in all its aspects, 6nd : have given it their whole-hearted support, and are just now giving of their means and their time in. order that the Association may be & success. Your oorresoondent would sit with folded hands In his own sumptuously furnished. room and say, "Let the young men: look after themselves,"-and. because an earnest effort is being made tb do something practical in the direction of preventing the sons of the peoEle from getting on to the wrong track, c, forsooth, would throw cold water on the scheme. . , Let mc remind him and others (if any) who agree with him that levelheaded, leading, and right-thinking men the wide world over are recognising that the V.M.C.A., with its broad basis, is an institution worthy of support, and the results show that they are not mistaken . I shall be glad if "Dissentient" will call on mc and , discuss the matter. It would be well if he. would bring his cheque-book with him—he might need it when we have finished our talk. — Yours, ,etc. , , ' C. E. SALTER, President V.M.C.A., Christchurch. October 6th.
