THE V.M.C.A.

TO THE KDITOE OF "THE PKESS."

Sir, —In reply to Mr George Stening, I would remark that my charges (accusations?) exist only in hie imagination. I stated my opinion that there was no real necessity for the V.M.C.A. members, of all people, to enjoy a palatial residential club at the pubiio expense—nothing more. I am told that the reason is that in some way this arrogant pil© of brick and stone will have great influence for good in the movement, but I ask, when did riches or vainglory have any part in the work of John Knox, Luther, Bunyan, Wesley, or of any of those who have exercised religious influence in the highest degree. Did this sort of thing have any part in the teachings or doctrines of the Founder of the religion. I have it in my mind that He said: "Sell all you have, and give to the poor." The V.M.C.A. seems to have bettered jthis precept so as to read: "Collect all you can and build yourselves a palace," -which reminds mc of James Russell Lowell's For John B. • Robinson, he Sez they didn't know everythin , c'own in Judee. On a certain occasion c celebrated Turk said, with cutting irony, "See how these Christians love one another." Were he to visit Christchurch at present, he could say in all sober truth, "See how these Christians love themselves."—Yours, etc., DISSENTIENT. BIBLE-READING IN SCHOOLS. TO THE EDITOB OF "THE PBEfiS.' , Sir ; —That the Board of Education for North Canterbury should have the power to prevent School Committees under its jurisdiction from doing that which School Committees elsewhere are at liberty to do, as, for instance, those of Nelson and Napier, in the matter of affording facilities for religious instruction to the children attending their schools, surely poima to the desirability of a vniform administration of the Education Act throughout the Dominion. "Mutatis mutandis," whatsoever is legal for the School Committees of Nelson and Napier should be legal for those of Canterbury, Boards of Education notwithstanding.—Yours, etc., R. N. GARBETT._ A little forethought may save you no end of trouble. Anyone who makes it a nils to keep Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy at hand knows this to be a fact. For sale by all Chemists and Storekeepers. 10
