LABOUR'S LATEST DEMAND
EXPORT DUTY "WANTED

MELBOURNE. May 20
A deputation from the /Trades Hall Council asked the Minister of Customs to impose an export duty on wheat, meat and butter, so as to prevent exportation and. increased prices. They urged tliat speculators should be stopped from forcing up prices. The people reaped no benefit from bounteous seaeons, an 3 speculators alone benefited.
Tho Minister in reply said he considered tbe Government should keep eufficient produce in tho country to prevent the raising of prices. Ho promised to submit the matter to the Cabinet, and if investigation shored tbat the producer was not getting a fair share and tho consumer paying too much, it might help the Government to , solve a knotty problem.
