CITY WATER SUPPLY.

HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM. PROGRESS OF THE Woß__. An interesting report on the progress of the work of carrying out the high pressure water supply system for tho city was presented by the General Water Supply Committee at the meeting of the City Council last night.

Tho report stated that during tho last week tho contractor had had to suspend all concrete work, owing to the inability of tho Cashmere water supply to give the requisite quantity of water. The excavation was now complete, lhe main wall was carried up to its full height, viz., 22 feet, and all round with the exception of the gap through which tho spoil had been carted out. About 20 yard- more concreto would complete the wall. All tho steel work was in pc-ition and rivet ted up. Tho bottom was levelled off true, and tho re-inforce-nient of one half was in position. About one quarter of the timber in the roof was in position, and a start should be mado with the concrete work in both roof and bottom early next week.

Tho Pumping Station work was well in hand. The brickwork was completed with the exception of tho cable entls. Tho roof principals were all in position, and tho purlins were in place. A start had been mado with the rough lining in the roof.

Tho foundations of tho pumping plant were now complete, and tho producers, scrubbers and pumps wero in place. Both engines were, on their beds, but wero not yet bolted down.

Regarding pipe-laying, the report srtated that the 18inch main was now complete, with the exception of about two chains at the Reservoir end and the junction of the pumping main. The 15 inch main was complete up to its termination at Armagh street. The 12 inch mains in St. Asaph, Colombo and Victoria streets were completed. Tho S inch main in Fitzgerald avenue was completed from St. Asaph street to Kilmore street Tiridge. The 6 inch mains in Moorhouso avenue west, St. Asaph street west, Tuam street west, Cashel -treet west (except the bridge), and Hereford street west, were completed. Tho 6 inch main in Bealey avenue was completed from Victoria street to Madras street. The renin : n----ing streets in steel to be completed were:—Bealey avenno (portion,;, Fitzgerald avenue (portion), Moorhouse avenue (portion), Glouoester street west, Worcester street and High street.

Up to date lengths of mains totalling over fifteen miles had been laid down.

The following tenders wero recommended for acceptance:—Braes work, Price and Son**- £393 15s; cast iron corners, I/ucas Bros, £141 lis; special casting, for wells, etc., P. and D. I>iincan, £42 15s; special steel pipes,, Spiral Pipe Company (only tender received), £14.837 17s " 2d. The recommended tenders were the lowest in all cases.

The report was adopted and the tenders accepted.
