MEETING OF BOARD OF GOVERNORS.

Tho Board of Governors of Canterbury College met yesterday. Present :—Mr G. W. Russell, M.P. (chairman), Bishop Grimes, Messrs T. W. Adams, W. H. Montgomery, Geo. Rennie, C. H. A. T. Opio, G." T. Weston, L. B. Wool, T. W. Rowe, T. S. Foster, W. irard, Dr. Talbot, Dr. Moorhouse, Dean Harper, and Bishop Julius. Apolgies for absence were made for Messrs J. L. Scott and T. Hughes. Tho Colle_e Calendar for 1909 was passed for circulation. A FINANCIAL ADJUSI__ENT.

Tbo Chairman moved:—"That pursuant to tho authority conferred on th. Board by the Canterbury College Empowering Act, 1.1/ d, section 5, it is ordered—(l) That out of the capital moneys now lying to the credit or the en .k_v men ta un_.r its ooncrol, there be advanced a sum of £-000 to the Boys' High School Account, aud £03_4 to the College account, and that such moneys so advanced be applied in payment to tho Bank oi New ______ Wales of moneys provided in or about tho year 16_t> lor buildings erected. (-2) 'lhat such advances be debited to the accounts of the Boys' __ijr_i „_„_ol and College accounts rct_p__tiv_ly in the books of tho College. (_> That tho income derived Irom tho endowments and working of tho Boys' High School and College respectively be charged with interest upon the amount trom time to time owing by them in respect of such said several advances at tbo rate of four pounds per centum per annum until the whole amount of such several advances r-spectively shall have been reimbursed to such endowments. (..) That all moneys received by way ot interest in respect of such several advances shall bo credited to tho income ot tho endowments, which shall from time to time be found to have furnished capital for tho purposes of such advances, and in proportion to the amount of capital furnished by each such endowment respectively." The Chairman explained that the motion had been prepared by the Board s solicitor in accordance with the law, and had also been before the finance Committee. The amount mentioned (£10,834) had been advanced by tho bank, at tho timoof tho separation of the Agricultural College from Canterbury College, in order to pay debts owing in. respect to buildings. Since then there had been a chronio overdraft of the amount mentioned, the understanding being that tho bank would charge no interest while tne ordinary College Fund Account was in credit to the amount of overdraft. Tho bank bad charged no interest, but tho accounts mentioned in the motion had been charged interest at the rate of 4 per oent. on the amount debited to them. It would bo a matter of book-keeping, and would not alter the finances of cither the Collego or the Boys' High School, it would, further, prevent complications arising irom having two accounts at the bank, one of whioh was inoperative. The College Committee recommended that, in acoo-danoo with Section 9of the Canterbury Oollege Empowerinjc __st, 1908, the Board at its S'ebruary meeting proceed to appoint a rector; ' that tlie appointee be, if necessary, ' provided with assistance in his Chair; that tbe Professorial Board bo invited t.i suggest the name of a professor for ; the appointment; arid that tho first appointment bo for one year only. The ■ Committee further recommended that 1 Blr E. J. Wilson be offered tho appoint- i ment of student assistant in modern languages and English for the year < 1909, at a salary of £100 per annum, ( to be divided equally between tlie two Chairs; that the support of tho Board lie __ given to tho petition to the ! University Senate, praying that the ' Maori language should be included in ] tho list of optional subjects for the * matriculation examination; that the " following lecturers bo re-appointed at ' Canterbury Collego for tho year 1909: —Jurisprudence-and law, T. A. Mur- ' phy; music, Dr. J. C. Bradshaw; ] mental science, C. F. Salmond; assist- ' ant lecturer in classics, C. F. Salmond; 1 accountancy and accounting, J. Morri- ' son; education, E. Watkins (without salary); assistant "in mathematics, C.M. " Stubbs; dental G. H. Parkin- ' son (if required). Tho committee also J recommended that Miss Katherin© El- ' lis b© appointed to control the author- ! ised boardinehousc for pupils of the Girls' High S-fiool; that Mr J. H. ] Smith be granted further leave of absence for the first term, Boys' High ' School. The committee reported having accepted tho offer of Professor Cook > to present a number of mathematical books to the College Library. _ Tho discussion on tihe report was taken in committee.
