PRESENTATION OF MEDALS

The distribution of Dominion Day medals to school children attending the various city and suburban schools took place yesterday. Tho Education Department had previously expressed a desire that tbe formal celebration should tako place on Saturday, at 11 a.m., in order to secure uniformity in respect to the time of the proceedings throughout tho Dominion. N " Owing to a parade of cadets being called for Saturday afternoon, it wa3 considered in Christchurch that it would be preferable to hold the function on Friday, so that tho cadet corps could participate in it. The probability of tho cadets turning out twice on Saturday was thought to bo rather remote, so tho -morning function was abandoned in favour of tho review. The souvenir of Dominion Day, presented by tho Government to "school children is an inscribed aluminium disc or medal, about the size of a florin. On the obverse of tho medai is the King's' head, surmounted by a crown, and surrounded by tho Union Jack and New Zealand flag. Tho inscription stamped on this side of the medal is, "Edward Vll. of the British Dominions, King." The reverse boars tho inscription: "Presented to the children attending the schools of the Dominion. New Zealand proclaimed a Dominion, Septemtior 2oth. 1907." The inscription is flanked by New Zealand fern leaves.
