THE TALISMAN MINE.

. o . AN EXPERT ON THE PUMPING OPERATIONS.

SOME IMPORTANT INFORMATION.

(SFFXI-L TO "THE ritKSS.") WELLINGTON, September 25. Tho members of the local committee (Dr. Knight and Mr Weston) state that Mr Bigelow, the mechanical expert to Messrs Bewick, Moroing andi Co., having inspected the Talisman mine, is fully satisfied that tho thirteenth level can bo unwatered and the Talisman shaft sunk to the fourteenth level with tbe assistance of a sinking pumpr This latter, with the pumps now at tho mine, will be sufficient to deal with all tho water encountered, in the levels, and should enable tho development work to bo resumed on the thirteenth level within a few months. This additional plant should not cost more than £2000. If adopted, this scbeino will colve tlio problem of tlio development of tho Bonanza section at once. In however, a permanent- eehemo is suggested by which tlio Woodstock shaft win be sunk to the depth of <500 ft from river level, and connect with the fourteenth level from the Talisman shaft. The Woodstock shaft would thou be equipped with a Cornish pump, capable of eealing with all the water that could, reasonably be expected from either the Crown, or the Talisman working?. This scheme, when completed, wotdd enable the present pumps in the Talisman shaft to "be dispensed with., and the Cornish pump would be worked at less cost than the present ones, which are driven with compressed air. This latter scheme would tako about two years to complete, but when completed, would enable tlie mine to be worked more economically and on a mor© extensive scale than before, notably in. the prospecting-of the Woddstock section and" the ground to the north side of th- Waitawheta stream. As, however, the temporary scheme will enable the Bonanza section to be developed -down to the fourteenth level, shareholders will liave no reason to complain about delay. - It is now certain that the water will not rise beyond No. 12 level. There is plenty of ore in sight above that level to keep the battery going, and to maintain an average of £15,000 a month. The shareholders will, a few months hence, find, when No. 13 level is unwatered, that they will have lost very little by the difficulties of tbu past few weeks. The fact that Mr Bigelow was the expert wbo< designed th* Lattery and the'treat-' lnei.t plans of the Alawkw Treadwcil mine, which ranks in importance with the Waihi, shov.kl be of interest to .shareholders, yind satisfy them that the best wall be done on x their l)eh_tf., ; ;
