MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

Air H. W. Bishop, S.M., presided at the Alagistrate's Court yesterday. Four first offenders for drunkenness were each fined 5s and costs. John Green, a third offender, on a similar charge, was sentenced to fourteen days' imprisonment. Cecilia AlcAlillian was charged with being an habitual drunkard. The Aiagistrate ordered her to come up for sentence when called upon, on condition that she remained in the Salvation Army Home for three months. Alary Friend pleaded guilty to being an habitual drunkard, procuring liquor during tho currency of a prohibition order, using obscene language and wilfully breaking two cab windows, valued at 355, the property of Wm Hayward. Mr Leathern, who appeared for accused, said that when she was drunk she was almost mad. She was a married woman, but her husband had deserted her, and sho had recently been living with another man. This man had received notico of transfer to Palmerston North, and was leaving that night by the Mararoa. If the Aiagistrate gave the accused another chance she would also go to Palmerston. _xr Bishop said that it was practically asking him to let the accused go to a small town in which she would bo under less supervision, and probably would paint it red. He would bo very pleased to get rid of hor, but ho did not care about putting hex on to another place. He did not know .what Palmerston North would liave to say to him if ho let her go there. The accused would got another chance, but ho did not think ho would sea much return for it. Ho was beginning to ask himself whether his leniency in such oases as this did not amount to weakness. After a caution tho accused was convicted on each charge, ordered to come up for sentence when called upon, and ordered to pay the cost of repairing the damage to the cab. Chas. Brown, a habitual drunkard, was made tho subject of a prohibition order, and sentenced to seven days' imprisonment with hara labour. Patrick Carey pleaded "guilty" to a charge of behaving in a disorderly manner in a public place. StationSergeant Johnston said that accused had a dispute with his wife on Saturday, and later went out on tho street and wanted to fight everybody. Tho Aiagistrate (as accused declined to become tho subject of a prohibition order) fined him 40s and costs. Edward Francis Johnston, who was charged with being a rogue and a vagabond, in that he was found by night, without lawful excuse, on the pre—lises of Regin—ld F. Wdlli—nis, St. Asaph street, was convicted and discharged. / Wm. Nisbet pleaded "not guilty" to a charge of obtaining a steel rule, valued at 6s, from Al_son, Strathers and Co., by means of false pretences. Ho was remanded till Saturday. Bail was allowed, accused in £10, and ono surety for £10. CIVIL CASES. Judgment was given for plaintiff with costs, in tho following cases: —Trist and Small (Air Ward) v J. Bowles, £49 6s lld; Christchurch Timber Workers' Union v Geo. Noonan, £1 os; Joseph Albert J. Uren (Air Bain) v A Colenso, possession of a tenement. LYTTELTON. A first offender, arrested on Saturday for drunkenness, was convicted and discharged by 'Air G. C. Smith, J.P., at the Lyttelton Alagistrate's Court yesterday morning.
