GERALDINE. At the Last monthly meeting of the Geraldine County Comic' the Chairman (Mr J. Talbot) stated that the matter of strengthening tho ltaincliff bridge h.icl been, referred to at the conference with the Levels County Council, who approved of the proposal, but had not dono anything definite in the matter, and tenders had been called for consideration at tho present meeting. Tho contractor for the Hanging Rock bridge had his plant on the ground, and tho work would soon bo under way. Tho contractors for tho new Opihi bridge wrote, 6tating that since tho acceptance of the tender it had been discovered that tho cased steel girders specified in the contract to bo imported from England wore, however, made on tho Continent, and as 6uch were subject to a 20 per cent, duty, amounting to about £200, and they asked for a refund of this money. Tho same girders had been imported twelve months previously free of duty, and neither the Engineer nor the contractors nor the firm importing the girders had been aware of the fact that they were not actually made in England. It was resolved that on satisfactory completion of the contract the Council would favourably consider the request for a refund of" the amount of the duty. The matter of contractors' sureties was considered in committee, and it was decided, subject to the approval of tho Levels County, to accept certain securities, approved hy the Council's solicitor, In hou of sureties. Tenders for strengthening the Raineliff bridpe were opened, and that of Mr W. _J. Tubb, at £410, was accepted,
