THE OVERLAPPING SYSTEM.
DISCUSSION BY THE mAMWAY BOARD.
The Fares and By-laws Committee stated in its report to yesterday's meeting of tho Tramway Board, that it had considered the question of estahlishing an overlapping penny section on th© -liccarton line. As the matter opened up th© question of overlapping sections in respect of tho whole system, tho committee had not yet been able to give sufficient consideration to such an important, matter, but hoped to bo ablo to report further to th© next meeting of the Board.
At. a later stage of tho meeting. Mr Sykes moved :—"That tho overlapping system bo adopted on the Id, 2d, and 3d sectionr- throughout tho system." He said the Board wa.s losing a great amount of revenue from short distance riders, who lived just over the various sections. Ho instanced a number of sections in point.
Mr Staples seconded the motion
Mr Pearce supported tho proposition. Mr Reer-o moved as an amendment: —"That tho matter l_e> referred to tlio Faros Conrmitteo for very earelul consideration, and in order that more light might, bo thrown on the s-übject." Mr Booth seconded tho amendment.
Mr Pearce. said there was no doubt thero were many people living halfway between the sections whose patronage was lost because they refused fo pay the extra penny. The amendment was carried.
