MAGISTRATE'S COURT RETURNS.

During the quarter ending June 30th there were 33 sittings at tho Ashburton Magistrate's Court, 24 of which were presided over by the Magistrate and 14 by Justice* of the Peace. The total amount of money .sueel for was £_7(5 17s 7d", and tho total amount recovered £416 Ls. Tho number of plaints entered was 112. distress warrants issueel 17, judgment summons is_>uod 12, and orders made on judgment summonses 3. The amount paid in stamps tor civil fees was £'37 18s. The criminal case fe*e*s amounted to £14 18s. and the tines paid amounted to £_1 3s. During the first 4i years the town was under No-license there were* 110 prosecutions for breaches of the Licensing Act, and over £1000 was paid in fines, and several offenders were r-entonced to terms of imprisonment. For the quarter ending June 30th. five persons were convicted for sending or bringing liquor into the district without the packages being sufficiently labelled, and one offeneler was fined £20 for keeping liquor for -ale. Seven persons were convicted and £nod for drunkenness.

The Court returns at Timaru for the quarter ended June 30th show that tliere were 90 offences, against good order during the period named, cX) of these being drunkenness.
