THE GENERAL ELECTION

Mr D'Arcy Chaytor'6 name has been frequently mentioned as that of a probable candidate for the Wairau seat. Mr Chaytor was asked by a Marlborough* -Herald" representative on Thursday whether he could see his way to disclose his intentions. Mr Chaytor gave it to be understood that the ambition of representing the Wairau m Parliament had been entertained by him. but he had never wished to be disloyal to his own political 6chool of thought, as represented by Mr John Duncan in contests, and therefore ho did not wish to clash with Mr Duncan on the present occasion. Ho had been requested to .allow himself to be nominated, but had been hampered by tho uncertainty a* to Mr Duncan's intentions on this occasion. Moreover. Mr Duncan's political colour was in question, and this had complicated matters. It was reported that Mr Duncan intended to stand as an Independent Liberal, with a leaning to the Ward Administration, and until he was definitely informed on this point he was "at sea." On the whole, he hardly saw how he could very well offer himself without a straight-out requisition from tho political school of thought he had attached himself to in the past, and from which he had no idea of severing himself. (press association telegrams.) DUNEDIN, July 4. Mr Isaac Green. Mayor of NorthEast Valley, has practically mado up his mind to contest Dunedin North against Mr Barclay. ELTHAM, Jury 4. Mr D. L. A. Astbury, a Lißeral candidate for tho Egmont seat, addressed a meeting last night.
