INTERPROVINCIAL CHESS MATCH.
CANTERBURY v. OTAGO. On Saturday evening a chess match by telegraph was commenced between the Canterbury and Otago Chess Clubs. There wero ten players a side, and the local men carried on operations in their olub room, Chamber of Commerce, where a wire, manipulated hy Mr H. I. Bennett had been run direct. Mr C. Amtman umpired hero for the southerners, whilst Mr Dodds performed a hke service in Dunedin for the local men. Messrs W. Fraser and Andersen rendered good service as checkers. The boards and players were arranged r.s follows:— CANTERBURY. OTAGO. Board. 1. Mt M. S. Stewart v Mr For.-wth 2 Mr H. J. Nightingale ▼ Mr EdwaTdfl 3MrF. R. Woodford v Mr Murlow 4. Mr W. Robert? v Mr Gculd 5 Mt F. J. Brooker v Mr Lydea-s 6. Mr W. Beckett v Mr Wnzht 7 Mr F. H. Cuinbcrworth v Mr Hall 8. Mr J. Compton v Mr Myers 9 Mr L. Roy Smith v Mr Chodowjki 10. Mr W. J. Cresswell v Mr Armstrong The loca' players had first move at tho odd numbered boards. At Board 1 the opening was a Rny Lopez. Mr Stewart won a Knight on the 11th move, and his proppect-s r.rc good. Board i—A Queen's Bishop's Gambit, in which tho play wo.s even nil throush. Board 3.—Giuooo Piano opening. The Southerner has won a pawn, but tie positions are still ooen. Board 4.—Kings Gambit declined. The local man has won a pawn, but neither si<Jo can claim much advar.tare. Board H.— Another Kinsr's Gambit declined. Mr Brooker announced r.i.ito on the ]«th move, but a clerical error two moves earlier on Southerr.?r's board wa* allowed to bo rectified, and the same i« now even. Board 6—A Kuy Lopez opening, in which the- Pur.edir. man if a pjwn up. Board 7—Arothcr Kuv Lopez. Mr Cumberwcrth won a Krri'-'Vt cr. the 11th move and a pawn two moves later. This should secure him a win. Br.j-.rd S.—A Scotch OamKt cVvlired. Tho local man is two pawns to the bad, but is threatening to win a piece. Board 9.—A!«o a Scotch Gambit declined. The Munedin man i* s> i»»'n up. Board 10.—Kirsr'f Bishop'? Gambit declined. The trame i<< fairly even, though ti:o local player h-a« won a rnwn. Tho match will be continued nest Saturday evening.
