ASHBURTON.
The fortnightly meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council, nekl on Monday last, was attended by tho Mayor (Mr 11. Davis), and Councillors J. Davison, It. Clark. P. Stewart. C. "W. Xiooll. D. Wood. T. F. Gibeon, and W. G.'Hillier. T!ia last-mentioned took Ilia seat for the first time. The debit balance at tho bank was stated to be £2288 2t>. The resignation of Mr Hugo Friedlandor, as a member of the Council, was accepted with regret. Tho Mayor and the Town Clerk were appointed to represent the Council at the bi-ennial conference of delegates of the Municipal Association of New Zealand, to be held in July. The report of the Works Committee recommending increases of salaries of tho Town Clerk. Domain Curator, and tho Inspector of Nuisances, was, after some discussion, adopted. The name of Cr. Stewart, as chairman of the Wtfrks Committee, was added to the Water Supply Committee. It wa-5 decided, on the motion of Cr. Xicoll, that a return be laid on the table at the next meeting of the Council, showing the salaries and duties of all the permanent employees of the borough. Accounts for £194 3s 9d were passed.
