HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

CHRYSAKTHEirUM SHOW.

President: Lieut. - Colonel Heaton Rhodes, M.P. Hon. Treasurer: Mr A. Cant. Secretary: Miss E. isneyd Smith.

The Chrysanthemum Show of the United Horticultural Bociety, -which opened yesterday in the Colosseum, resulted in the display of some magnificent blooms. Tlioee responsible for the staging had hardly made the most of opportunities, as the main portion of the show, the out blooms, were placed on the sides instead of down the centre. The latter course would have resulted in a much larger number of visitors being able to see the blooms by their being staged on two sides instead of one, and a far better light would also have been attained. One of the principal features of the show was the magnincenit display of blooms, for exhibition only, made by Mr A. E. G. Rhodes. All were splendid, but amongst thosS most noticeable wero Maud Jeffries, 3lrs i\ T. Thompson, Miss V. Pearson, F. S. Vallis, Miss A. Henley, V. It. Ohurch and Lady Talbot. In the Amateur Classes, for eighteen and twohro Japanese, Sir Arthur Cant had two beautiful first prize stands. Included in the first were fino blooms of Mrs Tadgell, Mrs F. T. Thompson, Ben Wells and Viola, and in the second, of Lady Talbot, Florence Penfold, Miss A. Kellerman and Maud Jeffries. Mr E. Smith, who took second, had a good etand, including good blooms of Godfrey's Pride, and Miss A. Henley. Mr Cant won tho silver cup presented , by Mrs Rhodes for six Japanese white and yollow, with a splendid stand. The same exhibitor in the class for one variety had a grand set of F. S. Vallis. Mr W. B. Clothier, in the incurved class had some good blooms of JMrs J. P. Bryco and Triuumph do Mahoji. Mr ClotihdeT had some good blooms of Mrs Greenfield in the class for nine blooms. In the open class Mr Bayiiss had a fairly good, stand of twenty-four, though it was somewhat uneven. Amongst the best were Maud Jeffries, Richie, Beatrice May and Lord Hopetoun. Lieut.Colonel R. Heaton Rhodes's stand In tho class for eighteen Japanese "was an excellent one., Dotably., _Mks A. Henley, Geo. Lauronoe, and Miss May Soddon. In the class for six Japanese and six incurved, Mr Biylisp had a fine coloured Madame E. Rogers, and in the class for six incurved, good blooms of Mrs Goo. Denyer. Lieut.-Colonel Rhodes exhibited good blooms of J. C. Neil in tho class for six blooms, and the same exhibitor and Mr Baylies had good stands in tho other classes in which they. competed. As a whole the exhibits were excellent. The fruit "was particularly good. Mr Bayiiss had a grand show , of new cactus dahlias, which were much admired. Mr W. A. Carpenter, Governor's Bay, sent a grand collection of Groff's seedling gladioli, some of which were remarkoolo for colour, notably one nearly blue. Twelve seedling chrysanthemums, raised , >hy Mr Button from one -variety were remarkable for their variety of colours. i

The Blyth Memorial Cup was won by Lieut.-Colonel Heaton Rhodes, -with six magnificent blooms of Maud Jeffries. The same exhibitor had also the three premier blooms of the show— Japanese P. S.
