LYTTELTON HARBOUR BOARD.

The Lyttelton Harbour Board root yesterday afternoon, when there were present —Messrs Geo. Laurenson (chairman).. F. Waymoufh, W. Ihinlop, Moore. S. R. Webb, C. Cook, J. Brown, J. Hay, Goo. Scott, Geo. Witty, J. Richardson Goo. Piteaifihly, P. Graham, H. Friedlander, and J. Latnbie. '

The' Chairman reported that the fallowing sums had been paid in to the Board's account since the last meeting :—Wharf ago £2G33 7& Id, pilotage and ;port charges £1795 8s 3d, towage, storage, etc.;- £884 7s sd, totaJ £5313 2s 9d, as comiparod with a total of £4176 13s 6d for the same period last year. The credit balance at the bank was £7838 10s sd. A return on the taible for tho three months ended March 31sfc, 1908, showed that" this year's receipts exceeded those of last year for the same period by £766 2s lid.. He had received a cablegram that day from Messrs Coode, Son, and Matthews saying that their report an. harbour oxte"hsions, including the ship canal, was posted on tho 16th of last month, so the Board might expect to receive it before the cud of the present' mqnfh. Ho proposed to have it. printed and forwarded to the members of the Board as soom as possible after it was received.

It was resolved that the report of Coode, Son. and Matthews should not be made public until it had been considered by tho Board.

Tho Harbour Improvement Committee reported that after fully considering the question of the additional jetty accommodation at Governor's Bay, and looking to the large expenditure (£IBSO to £2000) which would have to be incurred in the construction of another jetty, the Committee could not at present recommend such an expenditure. The Committee could not recommend tho Board to accede to tho request for permission to use tho Coronation Hall for religious services on Sunday evenings. Tho Committee recommended that it be made compulsory that all vessels should employ a tugboat in coming out of tho Lyttelton Graving Dock, and that tho chairman bt> asked to submit, at a future meeting, the charge to be made for such service.

Tlio Engineer reported that the diodge Manchester had completed the ■work d"T dredging between Xo 2 jetty and the Gladstone, Pier on the 10th ultimo, since when she had boon engaged removing the shoal between the ends of Xos. 2 and 3 jetties and tho entrance. That work was subject to interruptions to allow stexmere to berth at tho above-mentioned jetties, but good progress was being made, and during tho period under review a quantity of 59,334 cubic yards., or 52.39S tons had been removed and deposited in Little Port Cooper. Tho Prkstnmn dredgo was engaged at Xo. G and ..No. 7 jetties when either was vacant. The rails were now being laid on the breaetTFork between No. 'J and No. .3 jettiee and the sheathing flush with.-the rail tops laid. A rubbing piece was being put along the East side of Xo. 2 jetty, and a similar piece was. now being put along the West side to prevent vessels from bumping against the projecting tops of tho fender pilea.. A contract had been let to Messrs Wallace and Co., of Wellington, for £7835 9s od for tho necessary timber for the enlargement of Xo. 4 jetty, the timber to be delivered by November 2nd. Tho reports were adopted. Mr Friedlander moved that Messrs Kaye, Graham, Moore, Pitcaithly, Lauronson, and the mover should be appointed a committee to consider the agwitipn of storage at Lyttelton.
