OBITUARY.
MRS L. J. FIELD
Ono of tho pioneer settlers, Mns Louisa Jane Field died on Monday morning at her residence, Kanfurly street. Mrs Field was born in Wiltshire in 1827, and arrived in the Charlotte Jane, one of the first four ships of the Canterbury Pilgrims, on December leth, 1830. Hor husband and herself had taken up a piece of land under tho Canterbury Association, and brought with them a houso in sections to bo erected thereon. Before the house was completed, however, her husband died. The house was taken down and re-erected in Lyttclton. Subsequently she irarf married to Mr Geoxgo i-'inld/of Lyttoltou, in 1852, and celebrated her golden wedding scone six years ago. In 1855 Mr ar.d Mrs Field removed to Port Levy, and resided there until 1904, when they came to Christchurch. In the early days in Port Levy Mrs Field was most helpful in her sen-ices to her neighbours, goinrx out at all times of day or night to render assistance as a n-urso. no doctor then being available. Her husband survives her, and there arc eight sons and two daughters. Mr Field, of Field and lioyds, being one of tho sous, the remainder being engaged in farming pursuits. The funeral will take place to-day at 2 p.m. '
Tho death occurred on Monday at Waikauae of 31 r George Gapes, for many years head of tho painting branch 'of the Public Works Department's workshop, and a -well-known exrosident of Cbristchurch, being a brother of Mr T. Gapes, of this city. About a year ago Mr Gapes retired from the" Government service, and took m> land at Waikanae. Ho was ergas o " recently in felling some bush, when a heavy branch came down on hie head, inflicting serious injuries, which resulted in his death. Mr Thos. Wilkinson, licensee of the Island Bay Hot-el, .near Wellington, died on Monday; aged 74. The deceased was torn in- England, and went to Australia when quite a. young man. After & varied career on tho Victorian and other goldfields, 'he .removed in 18Go to the West Coast of New Zealand, and tor many years was a prominent figure in> goM-nirnin-g circles at Recfton, -where ho was manager of ono of tho leading companies. Ho then -went to Western Australia, whereho engaged in miining pursuits. Upturning to New Zealand, 3)o tools an hotel at Woitot-ara, ■afterwards settling down in. Wellington.
