WELLINGTON NOTES.

. (SPECIAL TO "THE PRESS.") WELLINGTON, April 27. The demolition of the -'buildings on the Featherstcn street frontage of the Post Office block will be commenced shortly, and in their stead the Government will proceed to erect a stately pilo for the Post Office and other Departments. The interest in the Mayoral contest between the Hon: T. W. Hidop and 3Lr J. G. W. Aifcken, 31.P.. is intensely keen. The polling will easily be the heaviest 011 record for the city. The Premier has under consideration the question of cheaper fares for suburban services, or rather of an extension of tho present suburban area. The scheme is not yet matured, but there are indications that it will give general satisfaction, and tend to prevent to, some extent over-crowding in tho cities". In the Wellington district the Upper Hutt Valley, which is outside the present radius, is rapidly becoming a suburban area. Its population is daily increasing, and one day it will carry •a large population.
