(Received! April 22nd, 9.14 p.m.) S LONDON., ApriQ 22

Mr Lloyd-George, Chancellor of the Exchequer, in a speech at Manchester, predicted that there would , be old age pensions within 12 months. He denied that the Liberals were abandoning their programme of advanced sooial reform in order to win back, accordting to the suggestion which had been made, the confidence of the country. If they did that they would win the contempt of the country. He did cot beiieye that Manchester, which stood by fhe groat principles of 1906, would sell them in 1908! The defeat of Mr Churchill would be a blow at Free Trade. Free Trade was tho Alpha and not the Omega of Liberal policy, which was bu9t thereon. They must be careful not to remove the foundation. He emphasised the need of courage to combat the monopoly of privilege and the obstructiven'ess of vested , interests, whether in regard to the education question or the liquor trade.
