ANCIENT FROZEN MEAT.

The St. Petersburg Academy of Science has despatched a well-equipped expedition to the valley of Santauriakh, in Northern Siberia, to excavate the remains of tho mammoth which has been discovered 200 miles from the villago of Kasachia (cays Router's St. Petersburg correspondent). The head and part of the right foreleg were exposed by the action of water and haircovered flesh was found adhering to the bones. Arctic foxes had begun to eat the flesh, and water was poured over the exposed remains to form a protective coating of ice. The remains will bo transported by fifty sleighs, drawn by reindeer, to the river and the final stage of the journey—from Irkutsk to St. Petersburg—will be completed by train. The&o mammoths are believed to have lived about 100,000 years ago. Tho remains of the first ono discovered were hi such an excellent state of preservation that some of the remnants of flesh, after being thawed, salted and cooked, were eaten out of curiosity by some Russian scientists.
