PRESENTATION TO MR J. H. BENNETT.

- ♦- — Tho Sydenham Cricket Club held an enjoyable social evening in the Sydenham Football "rooms last evening 2 when thero was a good attendance, including representatives, from the various district clubs in Christchurch. During the evening Mr A. Lawrence, president of the club, presented Mr J. H. Bennett (who is leaving for England tomorrow, in order to try and obtain a position as a professional cricketer in one"of tho first-class Counties) with a handsomo gold watch and albert, % the fcrmer being suitably inscribed. Mr Lawrence spoko of Mr Bennett's sterling qualities on and off tho field, and cv behalf of the club wished him every success in his new undertaking. Mr I l '. H. Labatt, acting for tho Canterbury Cricket Association, then handed the" departing cricketer a purs© ol sovereigns, which had resulted from the final match for the Senior Championship between Sydenham and West Christchurch, the takings at the gate being for Bennett's benefit, together with subscriptions from enthusiasts towards the testimonial. Mr O. Caygill, one of the founders of the Sydenham Club, also spoke in eulogistic terms of Bennett's sterling performances on the field, both for his club ami Canterbury.
