BAND OF HOPE CONTESTS.
1 The musical and elocutionary contests which are being held i" the Choral Hall were well attended last evening. Though there were some blanks in the programme, owing to the prevailing influenza epidemic, an excellent series of recitations and pianoforte solos was presented. Special praise was accorded to the dialogue civen by the Durham street Band of Hope. The prize-winners for Tuesday evenine's competition* were:—Recitation, Claw E: Mr J. T. Down (Sehvyn street) 1. Mr TV. C. Mnttam (Oxford terrace) 2. Pianoforte duet, Class P: Mis* D. H-irper and Mr F. Lawrenco (Oxford terrace) 1, Miss Olivo Lawrence and Miss Elsie Butterfiold (Crescent road) 2. Pianoforto solo, Class E: Miss J. H. Burns (Aldington) 1. Club solos, open class: Miss C. Guntrip (Spreydo'n) 1, Miss E. Thompson (Enst Belt) 2. The competitions will be continued to-nizht, when a holiday programme, including vocal solos, hoop drill, senrf drill, and tableaux, will be presented.
