SERIES OF THEFTS.

TWO MEN SENTENCED. Two brothers, Frank and Arthur New berry, efied respectively twentyfive end thirty-one, appeared at the Magistrates Court yesterday afternoon, before Mr H. \V. Biehop, S.M., charged with committing a, number of thefts. The accused, Frank Newberry, pleaded guilty to stealing the following articles:—On Jun© 29th, from Welter Turvey, metal boiler, £2; April 3rd; from T. McCaughren, tiles, value £5; April 9th, from Charles Beacken, camera legs, value 20s; October 4thj from Parker end Jones, plaster centre flower, value- £1; February, from George Cull, pliimbere' pipe vice, £1; February 9th, from J. T. Cowley, photographic material, £7 Is; May 18th, from W. H. Langdown, camera *nd photographic material; between November and April, from Leslie Hinge, panoramic camera, value £20. In several of these cases Arthur, Newberry wee jointly charged. He pleaded not guilty, end the police offered no evidence against him. Ho was further , charged with stealing painters' material, value £11, from T. J. Archibold'e workshop, and pleaded not guilty. T. J. Archibold gev® evidence identifying the material produced in Court as that stolen from hie workshop. Ho eatd the aeonsed offered to pay him the value of the etuff if he would sey nothing about it. Detective Connell eaid that he found the material on the premises occupied by accused. The identification marks hod been removed. The , accused claimed the stolen articles as his property. Mr Hunt, who appeared for both accused, said that Arthur Newberry abeolutelv denied stealing the material. His brother pleaded guilty to the theft. The Magistrate said that both accused had been previously convicted. Arthur Newberry was fined £5 in. default two months' imprisonment. Frank Newberry was sentenced to three months' imprisonment on each charge, the sentence* to be cumulative on four charges J making the term of imprisonment twelve months.
