FATALITY AT LYTTELTON.

vAboat 5 o'clock yesterd«y morning, Mr B. Toomey nigut Wateauian tor tiw Harbour Board at Lyttelton, was making hie customary visit to the outer end-of tho eastern breakwater. He Went on board the dredge Manchester and found that her watchman, Michael fcLenryy was missing. On looking round, Mr Toomey noticed Henry's cap lying on the belting of the dredge, and .'he then saw the man , * body floating •in the water under the wharf near, the stern of the dredge. He gave the alarm, and ConsUhle P. Moore and several other men came to his assistance. .They took one of the dredge's boats and got the body out of the water and carried it to the morgue. The body .was not cold, and had evidently not been long in the water. Henry had been filling the dredge's fresh water tanks with a hose connected to ■ the pipe on, the wharf. The starboard tank was full, and Henry had evidently gone on the wharf and turned off the water, before putting the hose into the port side tank. It is supposed that in stepping back from the wharf to the vessel s rail he missed his footing and fell over one of the moorinz springs into the water. There was.* Bruise on the right leg, but no other marks about the body. Henry, who was abbitg t strongly-built man, was known to be a powerful swimmer, and it is thoupht-yseeing tihat his body was found floating in the water —that he died from the shock of the fall. Henry was a single man, - about 58 years of age, and a native of Cornford, Ireland. He had no relatives in New Zealand, but is said to have a married sister living in Brisbane. He had been in Lyttelton for very many years, end had , been employed on the dredge for about seven years. He was a particularly quiet, sober and steady nun, and vrts very popular among his shipmates. His bank-book showed that -his savings amounted -to over £430." An inquest will be held at lyttelton to-day.
