TO-DAYS MANCEUVRES

In order to allow Colonel Daviee. the Inspector-General, to inspect the North Canterbury Battalion under active service conditions, Lieutenant-Colonel Hawkins, Officer Commanding the district, drafted plane of an interesting field manoeuvre. The duy appointed for carrying out his ideas (iSaturday, August lOln, however, was very wet, and this, together with southern engagements which claimed Colonei iiavies's attention, caused the scheme to be postponed until to-day. Yesterday morning, Colauel Davics, accompanied by .Lieutenant-Colonel Hawkins, paid a rieit of inspection to tho locality at Cashmere, which tho latter liad selected as the ecene foi operations. They found that tho ground was drying mpidly from the recent rain, and would be in a perfectly lit condition tor manoeuvres to-day. The general idea is that a small force (represented by tho Highland Rifles, under Captain Stewart, with a detachment of artillery, under Lieutenant Beattie) hie landed at Governor's Bay, and at noon will have reached a point west of Dyer's Pass. Finding tho Pees disputed, they will move to a position between the Dyer's Pass road and the old quarry road. The Canterbury Mounted Rifles will advance via. the quarry road, and attack tho enemy's left flank. The infantry aro to ascend tho lulls from the right and left of Mr Wilson's homestead, end will cooperate with the mounted troops in repelling the invaders, and try to forco them T>ack to Governor's Bay. The infantry will be under Lieu-tenant-Colonel Creswell, tho artillery under Captain Duncan, and the Engineers under Captain Jones. Several unattached officers will be on the dietrict stefF for tho occasion.

# original programme will be carried out in its entirety, with this exception—that the paufclocks in the eastern side of Dyer's Pass road will bo excluded from the &r«a of operations, on account of tho lambing season.

The public will be afforded an excellent view of the whole of the proceedings from the hills directly above the old quarry road.

Professor Haslam has offered a challenge shield to be shot for by the four University centres. The competition is open to pact and present volunteers attending lectures.
