GOVERNMENT LABOUR REPORTS.
Wβ are glad to be able to print in this issue the report on trade and employment for the month of Juno in Canterbury, as published by the Department of Labour. 'A lew days ago wo drew attention to the fact that th€ 6© reports have usually been withheld from publication until they were about a month old, and that in oonsequenoe they lost much of their value before thoeo interested wero allowed to see thorn. We pointed out that, if the delay occurred in the Government Printing Office, a eimple remedy "would bo to forward copios of the reports direct to the newspapers. Apparently following upon this suggestion, we received yesterday from Wellington a set of advance sheets of the "Journal of the Department of bour," comprising tho referred to. Copies have, no doubt, been cent to other newspapers, and in this way the Department of Labour has conforred upon a large section of tne community a real benefit which will t>e appreciated by those concerned. .Nevertheless, at the risk of being thought hypercritical, we may express the hope that still further expedition -will Do shown on future occasions. Even now, these labour market reporte, as they appear in our columns this morniTTg, arc, wo believe, moro than a fortnight old. We congratulate tho Department of Labour on the improvement tnat has been so promptly effected, but we hope we may take it as a eign of a more complete reformation in the future. Even as it is, the Labour Department has sell a gocd example to tho Department of Agriculture whicu it is to bo hoped the latter will not be slov.i to follow.
